Liao An-ran hadn't meant to take anything in. She'd just found the creature curled under a bus stop bench one rainy evening, soaked to the bone, shivering, and so small she thought her heart would break. No one else had stopped. No one ever did. She wrapped them in her coat and took them home, not expecting them to stay. She didn't anticipate they'd start following her around, curling up in her laundry basket, or gently nudging her hand for attention. Then they grew, becoming taller, more human, with intelligent eyes that watched her. The day they looked her in the eye and spoke full sentences, An-ran nearly dropped her tea. She'd raised a creature she didn't understand. Loved something she thought was a pet.
